Can You Pay for Shape & Strength Club With an HSA or FSA? — Shape & Strength Club

HSA & FSA — a member guide

Pay with pre-tax dollars

If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) through work, your Shape & Strength Club membership may be eligible for reimbursement. Because that money was never taxed, getting it back feels like roughly a 30% discount — and it’s simpler than most people think.

Why a workout membership can count

On its own, general exercise doesn’t qualify as a medical expense. It becomes eligible when a licensed medical provider documents that it’s part of treating a specific condition — for example, obesity (the condition your GLP-1 treats), high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or chronic pain. That document is called a Letter of Medical Necessity.

For women on a GLP-1, the fit is natural: your medication was prescribed to treat a medical condition, and strength training is how you preserve lean muscle while you lose weight on it. Here’s the whole process:

Three steps to reimbursement

01

Join and pay the normal way

Use your regular card, just like any member. Don’t put your HSA/FSA card into checkout — those cards are often declined outside medical offices, and you don’t need it here. Skool emails you a receipt for every payment. Save those emails — they’re half of your paperwork done.

02

Ask your provider for the letter

The easiest person to ask is the provider who prescribed your GLP-1 — they already know your condition. Ask for a Letter of Medical Necessity that includes your diagnosed condition, a statement that supervised strength training is recommended to treat or manage it — including preserving lean muscle during GLP-1 treatment — and the time period it covers (a letter can cover up to 12 months). Members: a one-page request note you can hand to your provider is posted inside the community.

03

Submit for reimbursement

Send your Skool receipts + the letter to your HSA/FSA administrator — most have an app or online portal for exactly this. Keep copies of everything you submit. Each new month’s receipt can go in under the same letter while the letter is valid, so after the first time, this takes a couple of minutes a month.

FSA deadline

Most FSA money expires December 31 if it isn’t spent — some plans allow a short grace period or a small rollover, so check your plan’s exact rules. And ask your administrator whether an annual membership counts before buying one to use up a balance; rules vary by plan.

Please note: eligibility is decided by your provider and your plan administrator, not by Shape & Strength Club, and this page is not medical or tax advice. If you’re unsure about anything, one quick call to your administrator before you start saves surprises later.

Questions, answered

Can I just pay with my HSA/FSA card at checkout?

Please don’t — those cards are often declined outside medical offices. Pay the normal way with your regular card, keep the receipt Skool emails you, and get reimbursed by your plan afterward. That’s the route that works.

Who decides if my membership qualifies?

Your medical provider documents the medical necessity with the letter, and your HSA/FSA plan administrator has the final say on reimbursement. It’s never Shape & Strength Club’s call, and reimbursement is never guaranteed — which is why we say “may be eligible.”

How long does the letter last?

A Letter of Medical Necessity can cover up to 12 months. While it’s valid, each new month’s Skool receipt can be submitted under the same letter — a couple of minutes a month after the first time.
